National Instruments PXIe-8108 PXI Embedded Controller

The NI PXIe-8108 (Part Numbers: 781034-02, 781033-01, 781034-01, 781034-04, 781033-04, 781033-02, 781033-00, 781034-00, 781033-33, and 781034-33 ) is intended for PXI and CompactPCI systems. This Controller can be utilized for modular instrumentation and DAQ applications, along with applications involving rigorous scrutiny or system development. When this PXI Controller is placed inside a PXI Express Chassis, the result is a small, high-performing PC platform.

The PXIe-8108 has four Hi-Speed USB ports, one 10/100/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit) Ethernet ports, 6 MB shared L2 Cache, 80 GB SATA minimum hard drive, and an Intel Core 2 Duo T9400, 2.53 GHz dual core processor. With the dual-core processor’s capability, two applications such as NI LabVIEW and Microsoft Excel can both complete on an individual core simultaneously. Multithreaded applications like LabVIEW take complete advantage of dual-core processors since they automatically isolate their tasks into individual threads. A dual-core processor can complete two of these threads at the same time.

NI has a USB-to-dual-PS/2 keyboard/mouse adapter cable, which can link a legacy PS/2 keyboard and mouse to one USB port on the PXI Embedded Controller. There are also external USB CD-ROM/DVD-ROM and USB floppy drives for the PXIe 8108. These drives can be linked to the Controller for simple software installation and upgrades. These drives are powered via the USB ports, so external power connections are not necessary. Other USB peripherals, such as USB speakers to add audio, are available from PC peripheral manufacturers. In addition, there are a variety of plug-in modules for further peripheral I/O. There are modules that add communication with serial, IEEE 1394, and SCSI, and more. 

The four-wide 3U PXI Express module weighs 2.17 lb. It has a recommended operating temperature range of 5 to 50 °C with an extended option of 0 to 55 °C, a storage temperature range of –40 to 65 °C also with an extended option of –40 to 71 °C, an operating and non-operating random vibration of  0.3 grms and 2.4 grms respectively–all at a frequency range of 5 to 500 Hz.

The PXIe-8108 has been announced as Obsolete by National Instruments, but the Controller will still remain available for both purchase and repair services in perpetuity with Apex Waves.
