The National Instruments 780338-01 is a Multifunction Reconfigurable I/O Module that features Virtex-5 LX50 FPGA. The FPGA offers 28,800 flip-flops and 28,800 6-input LUTs, providing users with advanced flexibility for system timing and synchronization. The FPGA includes 48 DSP48 slices for efficient digital signal processing and 1,728 kbits of embedded block RAM for data storage. This RIO module is designed for high-performance on-board processing and is also known as the PXI-7842. This reconfigurable module is ideal for applications that require precise timing and control, such as hardware-in-the-loop testing, custom protocol communication, sensor simulation, and high-speed control.
The output section of the 780338-01 RIO module features 8 single-ended voltage output channels with a 16-bit DAC that provides a maximum update rate of 1 MS/s and a range of ±10 V. The enhanced R-2R DAC architecture ensures high-resolution outputs, with a short-circuit protection to ground for reliable operation. Digital I/O includes 96 TTL-compatible channels. Each channel is capable of sourcing and sinking 4 mA along with programmable power-on states and robust protection features.
The 780338-01 module supports 8 analog input channels with software-selectable input modes (DIFF, RSE, NRSE). It employs a 16-bit successive approximation ADC that achieve a resolution of 1 in 65,536. The module's ADC offers a conversion time of 4 μs and a maximum sampling rate of 200 kS/s per channel. Input characteristics include an impedance of 10 GΩ in parallel with 100 pF when powered on and a signal range of ±10 V. The RIO module ensures high input protection with ±42 V overvoltage protection when powered on. DC transfer characteristics guarantee 16-bit accuracy with no missing codes.
Timebase reference is provided by an onboard clock with ±100 ppm accuracy and 250 ps peak-to-peak jitter. The 780338-01 supports master and slave bus interfaces and facilitates data transfers through DMA, interrupts, and programmed I/O. It has 3 DMA channels for efficient data handling. Power requirements are 136 mA at +5 VDC, 604 mA at +3.3 VDC, 0.5 A at +12 VDC, and 0.25 A at -12 VDC.
The overall dimensions of the 780338-01 module are 16 cm x 10 cm. The unit weighs 152 g and features three 68-pin female VHDCI connectors. It operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C and a relative humidity range of 10% to 90%.
