National Instruments 780342-01 Multifunction Reconfigurable I/O Module

The National Instruments 780342-01 which is also identified as the PXI-7854 is a Multifunction Reconfigurable I/O Module that belongs to the R-series. This module features a user-programmable Virtex-5 LX110 FPGA that offers high-performance on-board processing and direct control over I/O signals. Users can customize applications for precise timing and control using LabVIEW FPGA Module. 

The NI 780342-01 offers a dedicated A/D converter per channel that enables independent timing and triggering. This unique design supports multirate sampling and individual channel triggering which is not possible with standard DAQ hardware. The RIO module supports a ±10 V voltage output range with DC coupling, and an output impedance of 0.5 Ω while driving up to ±2.5 mA current with short-circuit protection to ground. The power-on state is user-configurable for added flexibility.

The FPGA within the 780342-01 RIO unit includes 69,120 flip-flops and 6-input LUTs, along with 64 DSP48 slices and 4,608 kbits of embedded block RAM. It interfaces via PXI as both master and slave, along with data transfers supported through DMA, interrupts, and programmed I/O while using three DMA channels. The power requirements are specified at 484 mA typ at +5 VDC, 843 mA typ at +3.3 VDC, 0.5 A typ at +12 VDC, and 0.25 A typ at -12 VDC.

The input characteristics feature 8 x channels with software-selectable DIFF, RSE, and NRSE modes. The unit is equipped with a 16-bit successive approximation ADC with a conversion time of 1 μs and a maximum sampling rate of 750 kS/s per channel. The input impedance is 10 GΩ in parallel with 100 pF when powered on, and 4.0 kΩ min when powered off or overloaded. Inputs can handle a ±10 V signal range with overvoltage protection up to ±42 V when powered on, and ±35 V when powered off.

Output characteristics of the 780342-01 module also include 8 x single-ended voltage output channels. The unit features 16-bit resolution, 1.0 μs update time, and a maximum update rate of 1 MS/s while utilizing an Enhanced R-2R DAC. The digital I/O offers 96 TTL-compatible channels along with programmable power-on state and short-circuit protection for up to 8 x lines simultaneously. Minimum pulse width for inputs is 25 ns, and 12.5 ns for outputs along with a minimum sampling period of 5 ns.

The 780342-01 module operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C along with a relative humidity range of 10% to 90%. It is designed to meet various safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards that include IEC 61010-1, EN 61010-1, UL 61010-1, CSA 61010-1, EN 61326, EN 55011, AS/NZS CISPR 11, and FCC 47 CFR Part 15B. The NI 780342-01 module's dimensions are 16 cm x 10 cm and weighs only 152 g.
