National Instruments 781205-01 FlexRIO FPGA Module

The National Instruments 781205-01 or PXIe-7961R is a high performance FlexRIO FPGA module designed for demanding applications that require intensive digital processing and reconfigurability. It features a Xilinx Virtex-5 SX50T FPGA that provides 32,640 logic cells and 288 DSP48 slices for efficient digital signal processing tasks. The FPGA can be customized to fit specific algorithm needs that makes it highly adaptable for a wide variety of real time applications such as data acquisition, signal processing and control systems.

This 781205-01 module offers high speed data transfer rates through its PXI Express interface which is compliant with x4 PXI Express specifications and compatible with various PXI Express hybrid slots. The device can achieve up to 1.6 GB/s of data transfer per bank with its dual 256 MB DRAM banks. This facilitates the handling of large datasets and complex algorithms in real time. The module's onboard DRAM provides high speed memory access that ensures that data processing is both efficient and rapid.

Digital input/output (I/O) capabilities of the NI 781205-01 module include 132 configurable channels which can be set as either 132 single ended or 66 differential channels. The module allows a maximum I/O data rate of 1 Gb/s for differential signals and 400 Mb/s for single ended signals. This ensures compatibility with a broad range of signal types and communication protocols. The device provides protection and compatibility with various I/O standards as configurable through the FPGA.

To maintain synchronization across systems, this FPGA module features dedicated clock inputs that include one LVTTL and one LVDS as well as PXI Express clocking resources such as PXIe_CLK100 and PXIe_Sync100. This ensures precise timing and synchronization which are critical for time sensitive applications in control and automation systems. The module supports multiple connection resources that includes triggers and star triggers for advanced system integration and control.

The 781205-01 device is designed to handle challenging environmental conditions with an operational temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C and shock and vibration ratings conforming to industry standards. Its compact form factor (16.1 cm x 10.8 cm) and relatively lightweight design (213 g) make it suitable for deployment in space constrained environments without sacrificing performance. The module’s high power efficiency drawing only 3 A at 3.3 VDC and 2 A at 12 VDC ensures reliable operation while maintaining low power consumption.
