National Instruments 781788-01 Multifunction Reconfigurable I/O Device.

The National Instruments 781788-01 (or PCle-7852) is a Multifunction Digital Reconfigurable I/O (RIO) Device that features a Virtex-5 LX50 FPGA. It is ideal for applications that require precise timing and control, such as sensor simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, high-speed control, and custom protocol communication.

This 781788-01 device offers 8 x analog input channels with differential (DIFF), referenced single-ended (RSE), and non-referenced single-ended (NRSE) modes. The inputs are processed by a 16-bit successive approximation ADC that is capable to achieve a maximum sampling rate of 750 kS/s per channel. The input impedance is 10 GΩ (powered on) and 4.0 kΩ (powered off/overload), with an input signal range of ±10 V. 

The analog output section of this device includes 8 x single-ended voltage output channels. It also includes a 16-bit resolution DAC that offers a maximum update rate of 1 MS/s and a voltage range of ±10 V. The device ensures precise control with an output impedance of 0.5 Ω and a current drive capability of ±2.5 mA. The digital I/O capabilities of this NI 781788-01 model include 96 TTL-compatible channels, with a programmable power-on state and short-circuit protection for up to eight lines.

The Virtex-5 LX50 FPGA technology is used in this model that offers 28,800 flip-flops, 28,800 6-input LUTs, and 48 DSP48 slices, complemented by 1,728 kbits of embedded block RAM. The device supports multiple timebase reference sources with an onboard clock providing ±100 ppm accuracy and 250 ps peak-to-peak jitter. Data transfers are efficiently managed through DMA, interrupts, and programmed I/O, with three DMA channels available.

Power requirements for the 781788-01 multifunction RIO device include +5 VDC (136 mA), +3.3 VDC (984 mA), +12 V (0.5 A), and -12 V (0.25 A). The device dimensions are 17 cm x 11 cm, and it weighs only 127 g. The recommended operating conditions range from 0 to 40°C with 10 – 90% RH humidity.
