National Instruments FP-TB-1 FieldPoint Terminal Base

The FP-TB-1 is a screw terminal style FieldPoint Terminal Base with 36 channels. The FP-TB-1 is compatible with any FieldPoint I/O module excluding the dual-channel modules. The Terminal Base can provide convenient field wiring connections with the screw terminals. The manufacturer of this terminal base is National Instruments. The terminal base is easily accessible under part number 777519-01. The NI FP-TB-1 can be used with any of the FieldPoint modules, except the dual channel modules.

The FP-TB-1 can be clipped, locked, and mounted onto panels or DIN-rails. However, keep in mind before installing the network module that its power should not be in the active state with any power supply. The NI FP–TB–1 has 36 channels from which 4 are dedicated channel terminals and 32 numbered terminals are defined by the I/O module. Half of the dedicated channel terminals of the terminal base are V channels, while the remainder are C channels. The maximum current to these terminals should be limited to below 10 A. If the current flow is below 3 A, a single terminal can be used as a return path. The NI device has a maximum working voltage of 250 V (channels–to–earth, CAT II)

Thermal gradients are present in the FP-TB-1 due to many reasons such as hot and cold air draft, thermocouple wires, and the heat generated from the adjacent modules. The NI FP–TB–1 terminal wiring is made of copper conductor wire with 7 mm insulation layer by using standard 16-26 AWG stripped from the end. The copper wire is used generally unless a sensing instrument such as a thermocouple is used which requires a different material for the wire.

The NI FP-TB-1 weighs 7.4 oz, and measures 4.2 x 4.3 x 3.6 in. in physical dimensions. It has recommended operating and storage temperature ranges of –40 to 70 °C and –55 to 85 °C respectively, and a non-condensing relative humidity range of 10 to 90%. The FieldPoint terminal base is designed to comply with the following electrical safety standards: EN 61010-1:1993/A2:1995, IEC 61010-1:1990/A2:1995, UL 3121:1998, and CAN/CSA c22.2 no. 1010.1:1992/A2:1997.

National Instruments FP-TB-1 Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Are there any precautions to take with the FP-TB-1?

Answer: The FP-TB-1 FieldPoint Terminal Base is more susceptible to thermal gradient-based errors due to a lack of isothermal construction. Therefore, the base is recommended for use with thermocouple measurements only where these errors are acceptable or once minimizing precautions have been taken.

Question: What is the source of thermal gradient for the FP-TB-1?

Answer: The most common source of thermal gradients for the FP-TB-1 is the heat generated by the adjacent modules.

Question: What type of wire should I use with screw terminal connections to the FP-TB-1?

Answer: For screw-terminal connections, use 16–26 AWG copper wire that has had 0.28 in.of insulation stripped from the end.
