Featured with an Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 processor (2.53 GHz dual-core), 6 MB L2 cache, single-channel 800 MHz DDR2 RAM, and an 80 GB SATA (5400 rpm) hard drive, the National Instruments PXI-8108 (Part Numbers: 780446-04, 780447-04, 780446-02, 780447-02, 780446-01, 780447-01) is a microprocessor-based embedded controller. This controller is offered with a pre-installed operating system and officially supports Windows 7 Professional, Windows Vista Business, and Windows XP Professional. While Windows 10 can be successfully installed on the controller, peripheral drivers may not achieve optimal functionality.
For video processing, this model is equipped with a Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset with an integrated graphics processing unit (GPU). This allows the NI PXI-8108 to deliver solid graphics performance, but it does not provide advanced 3D rendering capabilities for high-end applications. The onboard graphics eliminate the need for a separate graphics card.
For connecting an external monitor, the embedded controller includes a DVI-I video connector, which supports both VGA and digital monitors. A VGA connector requires a DVI-I to VGA adapter, which is included in the shipping kit. Dual-monitor support is not available using only the onboard graphics, so simultaneous VGA and DVI output requires additional hardware, such as an ExpressCard-based graphics adapter.
The PXI-8108 is compatible with several software tools, including LabVIEW, Measurement Studio, LabWindows/CVI, Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual C++, and Visual Studio .NET, along with the NI-DAQmx driver. The device features multiple I/O interfaces with their corresponding external connectors: Video I/O interface: DVI-I (24-pin DSUB), Serial interface: COM 1 (9-pin DSUB), Ethernet interface: LAN (RJ45), Parallel interface: Parallel port (36-pin champ), USB interface: Four USB 2.0 ports (4-pin Series A stacked receptacle), PXI trigger interface: Trigger (SMB), GPIB Controller interface: GPIB (25-pin Micro D), Expansion Slot: ExpressCard/34
This controller utilizes single-channel 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-6400), supporting memory-intensive applications that require moderate memory bandwidth. Users needing additional memory can upgrade the pre-installed 1 GB RAM to a maximum of 4 GB using a single DDR2 SO-DIMM module.
PXI-8108 Obsolete Status has been announced by National Instruments, but the controller will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.
