PXIe-8880, 2.3 GHz Eight-Core, PXI Controller
National Instruments PXIe-8880 PXI Controller
The NI PXIe-8880 (Part Numbers: 783513-05, 783513-04, 783513-33, and 154471B-01L) is an 8-core PXI Express embedded controller designed for high-performance test, measurement, and control applications. The controller features an Intel Xeon E5-2618L v3 processor, triple-channel 1866 MHz DDR4 RAM, and 240 GB or larger Serial ATA solid-state storage. It integrates standard I/O connectivity, including DisplayPort 1.2, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, an SMB PXI trigger connector, and a 25-pin Micro-D GPIB connector
The SMB connector on the front panel can be routed to or from any PXI Express backplane trigger line. However, a trigger allocation process is necessary to prevent multiple resources from connecting to the same trigger line, avoiding double activation and potential hardware damage. The PXIe-8880 provides a system bandwidth of 24 GB/s and a slot bandwidth of 8 GB/s, ensuring fast data throughput for demanding applications such as 5G research, semiconductor testing, and RF record/playback. The controller comes standard with 8 GB DDR4 RAM (1 x 8 GB DIMM), which is expandable up to 24 GB using three SO-DIMM slots. It operates at 2.3 GHz base frequency, with a single-core turbo frequency of 3.4 GHz.
Upgrading RAM requires removing the PXIe-8880 from the PXI Express chassis. While using different-sized modules in each slot is supported, system performance is optimal when using three identical memory modules. If mismatched modules are used, the system may perform better than a single module but will be slower than a set of matched modules.
The PXIe-8880 is designed for high-throughput computing and time-sensitive applications, including real-time processing with LabVIEW Real-Time (LabVIEW RT). The controller supports NI-DAQmx, NI-VISA, NI Modular Instruments, and NI-Industrial Communications for EtherCAT, which are compatible with software environments such as LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, Microsoft Visual Basic, and Visual C++
As a 3U PXI Express embedded controller, the PXIe-8880 fits in a single system slot and requires three controller expansion slots. It weighs 3.4 lbs and operates within a temperature range of 0 to 50 °C, with a storage temperature range of -40 to 71 °C. It is compatible with PXI Express chassis, such as the NI PXIe-1085, and supports a maximum altitude of 2,000 meters when chassis fans are set to high.
