Keysight/Agilent 3499A 5-Slot Switch/Control Mainframe
The 3499A from Keysight/Agilent is a multi-function, five-slot switching and control unit that allows users to automate their test signal routing in both electronic testing and industrial automation. The 3499A provides the ability to accommodate up to five different modules; however, depending on the configuration of these modules, the total number of multiplexer, matrix, or general-purpose relay channels will be limited to 200. It is also possible to operate at speeds of up to 350 channels per second when scanning through a given set of channels. In addition, the Switch/Control Mainframe can simultaneously turn ON/OFF all 200 channels in less than 0.1 seconds, which makes this unit ideal for use in high-speed production verification and characterization of electronic components.
In addition to providing access to remote control via GPIB (IEEE 488) and RS-232 interfaces and allowing for SCPI command programming, the 3499A has a front-panel that guides you through the operation of manually controlling each of the available functions. The 3499A has an additional feature that allows you to interface directly with other digital equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, counters, and power supplies. This is achieved through the use of a 4-bit digital input/output bus. Each of the available relay modules has its own cycle counter that will allow the user to track the total number of cycles that each relay has been used. This information can then be used to schedule the replacement of the relays in your test system before they fail, resulting in reduced downtime. As the user loads new firmware into the 3499A, the life expectancy of the product increases because there is no need to replace hardware.
Users typically have production test systems, R&D bench-top testing systems, and Functional Automated Test Equipment (ATE). When a user needs to quickly route signals from a Device Under Test (DUT) to various measurement instruments, the 3499A is one solution. One advantage of the mainframe is that it is very flexible. The user can select from a variety of switch types, including multiplexers, matrices, RF switches, and multifunction digital input/output modules. As a result, users can configure their systems so that the exact number of channels and the exact type of channel required are available. Since the Keysight 3499A does not require custom-made switching hardware, system integration times are shorter, and cabling requirements are greatly minimized.
