Keysight/Agilent M9331A Arbitrary Waveform Generator
The Keysight M9331A is a two-channel Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG). Previously found under the manufacturer Agilent, this AWG is housed in a four-slot 3U PXI format that has been specifically developed to meet the needs of wide-bandwidth digital communications test. Signals can be produced by each channel at a rate of 1.25 gigasamples per second. Each channel offers ten bits of resolution at this sampling rate, resulting in incredibly low Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) over a 500 MHz bandwidth. Additionally, the overall IQ bandwidth will be 1000 MHz when utilizing an external I/Q up-converter. Single-ended and differential waveforms can be produced by each channel. The single-ended and differential outputs allow for either balanced or unbalanced loads to be driven by the AWG without the need for baluns in the test path.
Each channel on the M9331A AWG is capable of storing eight million samples. With an optional memory upgrade available, it is possible to store sixteen million samples. The advanced sequencing engine on the M9331A breaks down the stored waveform data into up to thirty-two thousand individual segments. These segments may include looping and conditional branch statements. The individual segments are then organized into sequences and scenarios. Long-duration, event-triggered simulations such as fading, interference, and multiple emitter environments are supported. A number of these AWGs can be synchronized together to support phase-coherent, multi-antenna test applications commonly found in MIMO and beam-forming test applications.
Programmable interface capabilities such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, and IVI drivers make it easy to integrate the M9331A into automated test systems. Industrial Automation Engineers use the M9331A to perform compliance validation of chipsets and radios that target wide-band proprietary protocols such as ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM), IEEE 802.11n, etc. The device is also used to perform functional testing of digital radio front ends where high bandwidths (>100 MHz), low spur-free dynamic range (≤ –50 dBc harmonic distortion and ≤ –75 dBc non-harmonic spurs), and a noise floor of ≤ –150 dBc/Hz are necessary. The ability to generate multiple channels synchronously, along with flexibility of sequencing and high sample-rate purity, makes the M9331A suitable for demanding signal generation applications, ranging from semiconductor characterization to production floor testing of modern communication equipment.
