Keysight/Agilent M9185A PXI Digital-to-Analog Converter
The M9185A from Keysight/Agilent is a PXI Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), which contains 8 or 16 channels of fully-isolated DAC outputs. It was designed specifically for Automotive Electronic Test (ATE) and other forms of ATE. Each channel can provide +/- 16 volts @ 10 mA (or +/- 20 mA) using 16 bits of resolution that provides +/- 500 µV and +/- 630 nA of step size. Channel-to-chassis isolation is greater than +/- 80 volts peak, eliminating the possibility of ground loop interference when attempting to drive multiple floating DUTs. Both versions of the module will occupy either one or two slots in any standard PXI chassis because the +/- 16-volt span encompasses +/- 14 volts, which is the typical operating span of most automotive ECUs. Because there are many automotive ECUs that require multiple isolated reference voltages, high channel density is desirable.
The M9185A also features a Remote Sense feature that allows a 4-wire feedback loop to monitor the DUT's DC voltage level. Using both high-sense and low-sense lines on the remote-sense connection allows the device to continuously adjust its output based on the actual DC voltage level sensed at the DUT, thereby compensating for losses caused by cable length. This eliminates the need for manually adjusting the output to account for cable drop losses. Voltage accuracy is specified at +/- (0.05% + 3.0 mV), and current accuracy is specified at +/- (0.09% + 5.0 µA). Time to settle is approximately 500 µs, and each channel has its own individual Over-Current Protection (OCP) circuitry implemented using a self-resetting fuse. The remote sensing capability of this unit provides a means of maintaining output precision under long cable lengths or varied load conditions without requiring an external multimeter for verification purposes.
Each channel on the M9185A can be updated either through software commands or via an external TTL trigger signal. An additional feature is a trigger out signal that can be used by other instruments in the ATE system to coordinate operations. The front panel of the M9185A includes a stacked VHDCI connector configuration that allows users to connect their cables very densely together. Keysight offers IVI-COM, IVI-C, and LabVIEW driver support for the DAC Converter to enable users to integrate the product quickly into existing automated test systems. Typical applications for the Keysight/Agilent M9185A include automotive sensor simulations, ECU validation tests, and any test application where multiple isolated bias supplies are needed with high accuracy at each endpoint.
