Keysight M5201A PXIe Down Converter
The Keysight M5201A PXIe low-IF downconverter module captures wideband RF signals over the frequency band 2 – 16 GHz and converts these to a lower IF frequency band, spanning 10 MHz – 2.4 GHz on four independent channels. Each RF input corresponds to an IF output, and there is a common Local Oscillator (LO) that spans 1 - 18 GHz and may be locked to either the PXIe chassis' 100 MHz clock, a 2.4 GHz external reference, or the DSTAR backplane for phase-coherent operation amongst multiple modules. There are also provisions for an external 2.4 GHz MCX input, which can provide a low-drift, low-noise reference to support use of this M5201A. Due to its very small size (it fits into a standard single slot, a 3U PXIe module), this module is ideal for many automated test systems requiring simultaneous parallel downconversion of multiple RF inputs within an extremely small footprint.
There is also a Xilinx Kintex UltraScale+ FPGA onboard, which enables customers to implement their own custom digital signal processing directly on the FPGA without the need for additional hardware. Customers can use the PathWave FPGA development tool to create and deploy graphical representations of their desired real-time signal processing functions, including digital downconversion, filtering, and other tasks. This greatly speeds up deployment of new complex measurements based upon customer-developed intellectual property (IP). Examples of typical applications using the four-phase coherent channels available with the M5201A include phased array antenna calibration, radar and electronic warfare simulation, characterization of semiconductor devices, and multi-channel signal intelligence.
The M5201A provides conversion gain greater than 0 dB from 2 to 14 GHz, an 8 dB noise figure, and phase noise of -130 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz offset for a 12 GHz carrier. Additionally, it achieves better than 60 dB channel-to-channel isolation to minimize cross-talk. The M5201A's wide instantaneous bandwidth (up to 2.4 GHz) and low phase noise enable the capture of both fast-hopping and wideband RF signals. Integration of the M5201A with PathWave FPGA and PXIe modularity offers engineers streamlined RF signal analysis solutions for aerospace, defense, and wireless communications testing environments where high channel densities, high measurement speeds, and accurate synchronization are all important factors.
