National Instruments 778697-02 Arbitrary Waveform Generator
The NI 778697-02 Arbitrary Waveform Generator (Model Name PXI-5421) offers 16-bit resolution at an astonishing 100 MS/sec sampling rate from a compact PXI form factor. This generator was created for use in applications that require generating a wide range of complex signals such as communication systems, consumer products, science & engineering research, automotive testing and defense/aerospace testing. Engineers may store large amounts of memory, as much as 32 MB onboard, which allows for generating long, accurate aperiodic waveforms without losing timing accuracy. Although it still utilizes the older PCI bus instead of GPIB connections, engineers will find significantly faster waveform download times, which directly cuts down the amount of time required to set up their test environment. The Signal Quality and Memory Core Architecture combines both waveform data and sequence commands into one memory pool, allowing engineers to optimize either extended sequence length or large waveform storage based on their individual applications.
The 778697-02 arbitrary waveform generator has some of the best signal quality available today. High-frequency image suppression is provided by an onboard elliptical filter at 43 MHz. Output impedance may also be selected from two standard values (50 ohms or 75 ohms) along with variable attenuator settings. This ensures precise signal conditioning. An optional Direct Path feature eliminates all of the gain circuitry so that engineers have a flat passband response for intermediate frequency applications up to 40 MHz. There are four different triggering modes: single shot, continuous, stepped, and burst modes. When used with the largest memory option, engineers can link over a million waveform segments together; each segment may loop back multiple million times or run continuously.
NI supports software drivers for the 778697-02 through a variety of programming languages, including LabView, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, Visual Basic, and Visual C++. NI also bundles the NI-FGEN driver with the 778697-02 that allows engineers to simulate waveform development before actual hardware is installed. The larger memory versions (32 MB and 256 MB) provide output capabilities for LVDS digital patterns in addition to analog signals. As a result, engineers can perform testing using both types of signals simultaneously.
In cases such as IQ modulation, where synchronization of waveform timing between channels is critical, engineers may use multiple modules and lock them together in a phase-locked relationship to operate in a multi-channel coherent mode.
