National Instruments 778296-00 VXIbus Controller
The National Instruments 778296-00 is a VXIpc-872B embedded controller that provides all of the processing and I/O capabilities found in a standard PC but within a double-width C-size VXI mainframe. This specific, unconfigured version does not include an operating system. This allows system architects and automation engineers to choose the best real-time or general-purpose software environments for deployment. It has an Intel Pentium III processor running at 1.26 GHz and comes equipped with 256 MB of upgradeable PC133 SDRAM. Both of these provide reliable computing power for controlling automated test sequences, as well as acquiring high-speed data and instruments, all from within the VXI chassis.
This model has extensive connection options to allow it to fit into various laboratory and industrial networks. Connection options include built-in 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, wide Ultra2 SCSI, IEEE 488.2 GPIB, dual RS-232 serial ports, a parallel port, and a USB 1.1 interface. A notable benefit of this model is the internal PCI expansion slot, which allows for installing a full-length or short-length PCI card. The internal PCI expansion slot is unique to the VXIpc?872B and 875B models. The added hardware can consist of custom digitizers, communication modules, etc. In addition to the internal PCI expansion slot, the 778296-00 comes equipped with an internal hard drive. The minimum size of the internal hard drive is 30 GB. The internal hard drive provides sufficient space for storing software applications as well as log files generated from measurements taken during operation. No external drives are required.
The 778296-00 can be used in either slot 0 or non-slot 0 configurations. To accomplish high-throughput VXI bus control with determinism, part utilizes the Intel 815E chipset along with National Instruments' custom MITE and MANTIS application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The VXIbus Controller complies fully with VXIplug & play specifications and supports many different types of software platforms such as NI-VXI, NI-VISA, VxWorks, and Linux. As a result, the part can support both turnkey test stations and customized R&D setups. Because it occupies two C-size VXI slots, it is possible to use it as part of a highly scalable and powerful solution for automating complex measurement systems and minimizing the footprint of external equipment while simplifying integration with the VXI mainframe.
