Pickering 40-320-001 High Voltage Multiplexer
The Pickering 40-320-001 is a ruggedized 12-channel high-voltage multiplexer designed for use in PXI-based Automated Test Systems (ATS). It was developed to switch large voltages and to support high-voltage operation. It is rated to handle both cold and hot switching, with peak voltage capability of up to 750 VDC or 750 VAC peak for hot switching and up to 1000 V peak for cold switching. Dry reed relays with rhodium contacts were selected due to their reputation for long life in harsh environments that involve high-voltage operation. Integrated into this module are RFI suppression circuits, which are used to control voltage surges and minimize Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) effects that may affect the longevity of the relay contacts in both hot and cold switching modes.
The 40-320-001 high-voltage multiplexer has been found to be useful in many applications that require accurate and reliable signal routing at high potentials. Some common applications have included circuit board isolation testing, semiconductor breakdown voltage monitoring, cable harness insulation testing and relay testing. Multiple channels can be selected via the front panel and the module can be programmed to implement either break-before-make or make-before-break type multiplexing to prevent accidental shorts between channels. The typical operating time of the module is approximately 1 millisecond, which allows for quick test sequences. The high-voltage connectors located on the front panel utilize a 37-pin D-type connector for safe connection to other devices. Relays are mounted in the back of the module and are through hole leaded allowing for simple replacement should they fail. In addition, a redundant relay is provided for each relay to facilitate maintenance.
The 40-320-001 is compatible with all standard 3U PXI/Compact PCI chassis as well as Pickering's own LXI Modular Chassis and PXIe Hybrid Chassis. Drivers for the module are available for a variety of programming environments, including Windows and Linux, IVI, VISA, etc., allowing for development using LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, etc. The design of the multiplexer leverages the same high-quality relays used in products manufactured by Pickering's sister company. Therefore, developers can have confidence in the long-term reliability of the module and expect it to perform consistently within a variety of industrial automation, aerospace, and automotive test systems where high voltage switching reliability is critical.
