Pickering 40-196-121 PXI Fault Insertion Switch Module
Pickering's 40-196-121 is an automotive & aviation validated 5A Fault Insertion Switch module. This PXI-based instrument will simulate various levels of electrical faults between test fixtures and safety-critical units being tested (i.e., Electronic Control Units—ECUs) to provide enhanced test coverage & system reliability. The 40-196-121 provides the ability to introduce opens, shorts between signal pairs, and shorts to externally applied signals (power or ground) to help verify how well the controller can handle demands of harsh operating environments.
Each of the multiple channels of this fault insertion switch is capable of independent operation or may be connected together to create even more complex fault simulation networks. Cold switching & hot switching capabilities exist with a maximum current capacity of 5 A, and the 40-196-121 has the ability to operate at voltages of 110 V DC or 100 V AC with a maximum power rating of 150 watts. High-quality electromechanical relays are used throughout the module, which allow it to withstand repeated test cycles. The architecture of the 40-196-121 also allows users to simulate open circuit faults on either side of a channel pair and to simulate shorts to adjacent signals or user-defined external fault sources, providing design engineers with great flexibility when creating their own automated test systems.
To make integration of the 40-196-121 into their automated test systems easier, Pickering provides software drivers for the Switch Module that include VISA, IVI, and kernel drivers, and these are compatible with many popular development environments, including LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Visual Studio. The 40-196-121 will fit within a standard PXI or LXI chassis, allowing test system engineers to develop high-density, low-cost solutions for large-scale test platforms. By providing the ability to perform comprehensive fault insertion testing, the Switch Module plays a significant part in the development and validation process for automotive and aerospace electronic systems and helps engineers meet strict requirements for performance & safety.
