Exfo FIP-500 Fiber Inspection Scope
The FIP-500 Fiber Inspection Scope, producedf by EXFO, is an automated instrument intended to test single-fiber, multiple-fiber, and duplex connectors used in data centers, telecommunications, and military applications with speed and accuracy. The tool uses advanced automation to eliminate the need for human intervention, providing a zero-button experience from insertion of the probe to saving results. In less than ten seconds, the system inspects an MPO-12 by automatically identifying the kind of connector, adjusting brightness and focus as needed, aligning fibers, acquiring photos, performing pass/fail testing in accordance with IEC 61300-3-35 standards, and saving the results.
The FIP-500 features double 5-megapixel sensors and violet LED illumination at a wavelength of 415 nm for increased contrast and resulting in better high-resolution imaging for better damage or contamination detection. It features a capacitive touchscreen, similar to smartphones, at 2.4 inches for easy navigation and visibility in different lighting conditions. It supports a variety of connector sizes like LC, SC, MPO, and duplex sizes using interchangeable SmarTips and quarter-turn mounting system. It features a novel proprietary capability for duplex connector ferrules to be inspected simultaneously, thus shortening testing time by 50%.
The FIP-500 also features a dual-core processor and connectivity via Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi, or USB-C for real-time information relay to the EXFO Exchange platform, thus improving compliance and reporting. It features a battery life of 11 hours and in-storage capability for up to 10,000 individual-fiber or 2000 MPO-12 results and is optimized for uninterrupted use in outdoor conditions. Its ergonomic build includes a textured grip, a reach length of 99 mm, and a thin form for easy use in tightly spaced fiber panels or confined space. Automated threshold adjustments thanks to SmarTips ensure consistency in pass/fail criteria and thus prevent human errors. The capability to hold up to 4-row MPO connector acceptance and future software upgrades greatly increases adaptability to emerging standards. The inclusion of integrated features like an LED flashlight and optional tilted optical heads also increases functionality in harsh conditions.
Applications that essentially satisfy the need for uncontaminating connections include central offices, 5G networks, FTTH deployments, and aerospace applications. The FIP-500 reduces operational costs by using field-replaceable batteries, requiring little training, and reducing tip inventory thanks to its universal adapter system. The FIP-500 combines ergonomic efficiency, accuracy, and speed to optimize fiber inspection processes while meeting industrial standards.
