Tektronix P6009 Passive Probe
Tektronix's P6009 is a high voltage, low capacitance passive probe suitable for making accurate measurements of signals using wide bandwidth oscilloscopes. It provides 100X attenuation so that the user can measure a portion of the signal, rather than the entire signal; thus, the user does not have to worry about overloading the circuit point being measured. The standard P6009 package consists of a single main probe body, a rugged 9-foot coaxial cable, and a compensating box that houses the adjustable components required to optimize the high-frequency performance of the probe. There are several tips available (i.e., retractable hooks and multiple ground leads) to provide flexibility in connecting the probe to the measurement point.
From an electrical perspective, the P6009 has an input impedance of 10 MΩ and a very low input capacitance of 2.5 pF. These two parameters are critical for preserving the integrity of the signal when measuring high-impedance circuits, particularly at high frequencies. The P6009 has a bandwidth of 120 MHz, allowing users to capture both fast digital signals and analog waveforms. Another important aspect of the Passive Probe is its ability to withstand input voltages of up to 1500 volts DC or RMS, although this voltage rating decreases as the frequency increases. The P6009's compensation range of 8 pF to 47 pF enables the user to match the probe to the specific input capacitance of the oscilloscope they are using, thereby providing the user with accurate amplitude and waveshape representation across all oscilloscopes and channels.
As a result of the P6009's unique design characteristics, this probe is extremely useful for engineers and technicians working with high-voltage circuits (i.e., power electronics, motor drive circuits, etc.), where the effect of circuit loading must be minimized. To ensure proper compensation of the P6009, the user should adjust the low and high frequency settings found within the compensating box to eliminate waveform distortion and measurement errors associated with inaccurate compensation. In addition, when performing high-frequency measurements, the user should always attempt to utilize the shortest ground lead possible to minimize ringing due to lead inductance.
