Keysight/Agilent 34932A Dual Armature Matrix for 34980A
The Keysight/Agilent 34932A dual 4 x 16 armature matrix is a dense switching module that was designed specifically as an add-on for the Keysight 34980A multifunction switch/measurement unit. There are two (independent) 4 x 16 matrices contained on the 34932A, each having sixty-four (two-wire) crosspoint latches. In addition, there are a total of 128 latchable armature relays. All rows and columns contain both a high and a low wire; therefore, it is possible to connect every pair of wires (both high and low) across all crosspoints. Since the design utilizes a latching relay configuration, once the relay has been closed, it will remain in that position regardless of whether there is power applied to the relay or not. Latching relay operation results in less heat generated compared to non-latching relay designs since there is no need to continuously apply power to hold the relay in its final position. As a result, latching relay designs provide longer-term reliability and lower maintenance costs when used in automated testing applications.
Engineering staff responsible for industrial automation utilize the 34932A to create flexible routes for signals between the devices being tested and various types of measuring equipment. Examples of common applications utilizing this type of switching include functional test systems utilized within aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics manufacturing. These modules support up to 300V @ 2A per channel at scan rates of 100 channels per second. Only one (the second) matrix from the 34932A is connected to the internal analog busses found on the 34980A's mainframe. Closing channels 921 & 922 allows the user to establish links between rows 5 & 6 of the mainframe's internal digital multimeter for accurate voltage and resistance measurements.
In addition, several 34932A modules may be configured together either internally or through the use of the analog bus backplane to build even larger switching configurations. Multiple modules may be used to build configurations that support over 1K two-wire cross points within a single Keysight 34980A mainframe. Each module utilizes industry-standard fifty-pin D-Sub connectors, allowing seamless connection using "off-the-shelf" cabling products, terminal block assemblies, and other mass-interconnection solutions. This modular design provides significant ease of integration and expandability capabilities for large-scale test sequences, thus providing the 34932A as the backbone for large-scale matrix switching in production testing and data acquisition applications.
