Keysight/Agilent 34945A Switch/Attenuator Driver for 34980A
The 34945A from Keysight/Agilent is a single-slot, removable unit for the Keysight 34980A multi-function switch/measurement instrument, which has its own internal drivers and monitors for various types of external RF/microwave switching devices. In contrast to using an additional power supply and relay controller, the 34945A module will provide a regulated coil voltage and TTL/CMOS-compatible control signal from the main frame backplane. It supports a large number of electromechanical and solid-state switches as well as variable-voltage attenuators (both latching and fail-safe) from Keysight and third-party vendors. Using either the 34980A's LAN port, the USB port, or the GPIB port, it allows users to programmatically set the switch state and read back the current contact position in real-time, providing a closed-loop verification process without having to add any additional hardware.
Using a single 34945EXT extension unit, a single 34945A may control up to 64 individual switch coils, providing 32 SPDT relays. By adding additional Keysight 34945EXT extension units, the total number of coils controlled by a single Keysight/Agilent 34945A may be increased by another 64 coils per extension unit, again utilizing no additional mainframe slots. Each Keysight 34945EXT includes two distribution boards that convert the high-density connector to a screw terminal block for easy field wiring. The Y1157A-Y1159A cable kits provided with each 34945EXT route the power and logic between the driver, the distribution board, and any remote extensions. There is an auxiliary power input on the Keysight 34945. A that allows multiple coils to be simultaneously powered, thereby aiding those applications requiring rapid, synchronized switching of their entire RF path.
Examples of typical uses for the Switch/Attenuator Driver include wireless communication testing, avionics signal routing, medical device characterization, and general-purpose RF automated test equipment. When combined with other function cards in a Keysight 34980A system that have a built-in digital multimeter, this provides a central measurement/routing station that eliminates excess cabling clutter and facilitates the development of software used to automate tests. Additionally, because all functions are located within a single system, tests conducted over extended periods of time yield consistent results. The expandability of this system along with the ability to read back the position of each switch element makes this product ideal for use as a basis for creating scalable microwave switch matrices in both research & development and production environments.
