Keysight/Agilent M8040A High-Performance BERT
The M8040A from Keysight (formerly from Agilent) is a completely self-contained bit-error-ratio tester (BERT) that can be used to characterize the physical-layer characteristics of, and validate compliance to, high-speed digital interconnects. The M8040A produces clean NRZ, PAM3, and PAM4 signals at symbol speeds ranging from 2 to 64 GBaud, which corresponds to data rates of up to 128 Gbps. The device contains a pattern generator with five taps of transmitter feed-forward equalization and an error analyzer with true real-time PAM4 detection to very-low BERT values. In addition, each remote-head unit is attached using short (approximately 1.85mm), rigid coaxial cable assemblies in order to maintain signal quality. The M8040A has a built-in calibration-based jitter injection feature that provides coverage of several types of jitter, including random jitter, periodic jitter, bounded-uncorrelated jitter, spread-spectrum-clocking jitter, and clock/2 jitter. These are all controllable independent of any additional hardware.
Design engineers use the Keysight/Agilent M8040A to perform receiver tolerance testing on various types of components such as chips, transceiver modules, backplanes, active optical cables, and other types of components that operate at either 32 or 64 Gbaud. In addition to performing receiver tolerance testing on components, the BERT can be configured to meet industry standards for multiple applications, including but not limited to PCIe 6.0/5.0/4.0, 400/200/100 Gigabit Ethernet, OIF CEI-112G, USB4 Version 2.0, Thunderbolt 3/4, and 64G Fibre Channel. With two pattern generator channels per module, design engineers can emulate an aggressor lane to simulate crosstalk. The system also provides interactive link training for PCI Express operating at 2.5 to 64 GT/s and for USB 3.2, plus SKP ordered set filtering and precoder support.
Besides the above-mentioned capabilities, the Bit Error Rate Tester also has other features, including forward error correction encoding and error injection to test devices with FEC decoders, memory-based pattern sequences using a pattern sequencer, and adjustable PAM4/PAM3 levels for performing linearity tests. Furthermore, the M8040A has an integrated clock recovery and equalization feature that opens "closed" eyes. Finally, it is equipped with a GUI that allows users to remotely control the Keysight M8040A using the M8000 system software. Through its remote head design and ability to provide repeatable stressful conditions, the module will assist design and test engineers in optimizing their margin of performance for future generations of computing servers and communication systems hardware.
