Keysight/Agilent M8049A ISI Channel Board
The Keysight/Agilent M8049A ISI Channel Board is designed specifically as an application tool for signal integrity in the measurement of channel loss when using high-speed receivers. The M8049A has 21 traces that can be selected to provide lengths of PCB traces that vary from 0.8 inches (20.3 mm) to 22.3 inches (566.4 mm). Trace lengths can then be inserted into the signal path to allow the engineer to precisely measure the effects of channel loss. Traces are cascaded both internally to a single board and externally from one board to another, thus providing a large number of channel loss profiles with small step sizes. The design allows for use up to data rates of 32 Gb/s, and its compact size enables installation near the D.U.T. to reduce additional signal degradation due to cable runs.
These ISI channel boards are primarily used for simulating frequency-dependent attenuators as described in standards such as IEEE 802.3cd and OIF-CEI-56G for the simulation of medium- and long-reach electrical interfaces. A single trace from the M8049A will simulate insertion losses of between 1 dB and 20 dB at 16 GHz, which corresponds to a 32-Gbaud link. In addition, this product adds to Keysight's compliance channels for SATA, DisplayPort, and PCI Express; therefore, it is important to characterize and test receivers according to multiple serial interface standards.
In addition to simply simulating loss, the M8049A boards simulate inter-symbol interference (ISI), a type of bounded deterministic jitter produced by loss in the channel. The ISI Channel Boards were fabricated on Rogers 4350B and Megtron 6 materials, commonly used in high-performance backplanes and server interconnects. Therefore, these boards accurately simulate data-dependent jitter. The amount of added ISI jitter is determined by several factors, including trace length, board material, data rate, and bit pattern. Receiver tolerance is generally specified in terms of picoseconds or unit intervals. Simulating ISI jitter with the M8049A is an important method of proving receiver robustness in consumer, server, and switch interconnects that utilize electrical cables, including TBT, SAS, 100GBASE-CR4, and 400GBASE-CR8.
