Keysight/Agilent M8054A Interference Source
The M8054A from Keysight (formerly from Agilent) is an interference source that produces interference levels of up to 32 GHz. Its design is based on a 1-slot AXIe configuration and can generate two types of interference: Random Level Interference (RLI) and Sinusoidal Level Interference (SLI). RLI is generated with a crest factor greater than 5 (i.e., a ratio of peak-to-root-mean-square values), which indicates how much energy is contained within each peak value of the noise. SLI generates a clean sinusoid with adjustable bandwidths ranging from 160 kHz to 32 GHz. Additionally, this instrument provides four separate output ports capable of producing either single-ended or differential signal outputs without requiring balun components. This reduces the overall complexity and cost of test equipment required for receiver tolerance testing. The four channels produce outputs with amplitudes up to 1 Vpp (single-ended) or 2 Vpp (differential).
In addition to its use in receiver tolerance testing, the M8054A can be used to test various receiver technologies, including but not limited to PCIe Gen 3 – 6 receivers, SAS receivers, Thunderbolt receivers, and OIF CEI receivers for 56G and 112G medium and long reach applications. Furthermore, this device can be used to conduct channel operating margin tests defined in IEEE 802.3bs, bj, by, cd, and ck and optical receiver stress testing as outlined in IEEE 802.3 and Fibre Channel specifications. As shown below in Figure 7-30, the M8054A typically injects level impairments into an Ethernet receiver setup after an inter-symbol interference channel has been applied using matched coupler pairs. For example, in a PCI Express receiver calibration setup, the M8054A can simultaneously inject common-mode and differential-mode sinusoidal interference prior to the channel, thereby allowing for full-scale stress testing.
As described above, the M8054A works in conjunction with Keysight’s M8040A high-performance BERT utilizing Keysight’s M8070B system software. The integration enables users to operate the devices via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and/or remotely. To minimize differential skew, reflections and losses during direct mounting to pattern generator outputs, matched coupler pairs (such as Keysight’s M8045A-802 and M8045A-803) are provided with the M8054A. Each output port has a nominal 50 Ω output impedance with adjustable offset capability and a range of termination voltages from -600 mV to 1.1 V. Frequency accuracy is ±2.0 ppm, and the connections utilize reliable 2.4 mm female connectors to maintain signal integrity.
