Keysight/Agilent E2941A Soft Touch Mid Bus Probe for PCI Express
The E2941A Soft Touch Mid Bus Probe provides engineers with a way to capture PCI Express (PCIe) protocol traffic on a non-intrusive basis via the chip-to-chip links on a printed circuit board. This probe attaches directly to a standard midbus footprint on the PCB. As a result, there is no need for a slot connector or an interposer. Engineers use this passive probe in conjunction with the Keysight E2960A Protocol Analyzer to check internal bus signals when chipset bring-up, driver development, and system integration are being conducted and other methods have been exhausted.
The E2941A probe has gold-plated Micro Spring-Pin Agilent Soft Touch contacts, which will provide an excellent, reliable connection to the PCBs without requiring any special surface treatment or cleaning. The soft-touch contacts adjust to the uneven board surfaces themselves and can be hand-tightened for a low-resistance connection. The low loading associated with the probe ensures that the signal quality will not be compromised, and the compact midbus pad design makes routing traces around dense PCB designs easier. The E2941A supports all PCIe link widths of x1, x2, x4, and x8 at speeds of 2.5 GT/sec and will accept differentially encoded data amplitude levels of 450 mVp-p differentially to 1600 mVp-p. The probe also features an external reference clock input that accepts a 100 MHz clock up to 2000 mVp-differential and will track SSC deviation of +/- 300 PPM. The ability of the probe to support modulation of reference clocks enables the engineer to analyze systems that utilize modulated reference clocks.
Overall, the MIDBUS probe fills a critical gap in the PCI Express validation process by providing engineers with a method to obtain protocol-level visibility between chips (not just at add-in card slots). The passive nature of the probe means that it does not generate heat and therefore will not adversely affect the DUT. The lack of active equalization minimizes the thermal effects on the DUT. A version of the probe exists called the E2941A-ASI that is used in ASI (Advanced Switching Interconnect) applications that do not require SSC. The ASI version removes the need for external clock circuitry.
