Keysight/Agilent E2960A Protocol Analyzer and Protocol Exerciser for PCI Express
The Keysight/Agilent E2960A unifies a protocol analyzer with a protocol exerciser in one device. The E2960A is designed as a single device that includes both an analyzer and an exerciser for debugging and validating PCI Express (PCIe) bus communications. It also performs bidirectional testing at full bandwidth over four different link width configurations: x1, x2, x4, and x8. There are two types of interchangeable probe boards that comprise the system. Probe boards are used to drive the Exerciser when they are configured as active probes. When configured as passive, non-intrusive probes, these boards allow the analyzer to capture traffic. Each of the three types of dedicated probe boards for x1, x4, and x8 link sizes has an x16 Add-In Card connector so users may directly test their own endpoint cards and motherboard slot.
In terms of traffic analysis, the E2960A has 1GB trace memory, patent-pending dynamic triggering, storage qualification, and numerous options for filtering and searching. The graphical interface has a view showing the overall traffic pattern and a view showing detailed packet decode information to quickly inspect the details of a protocol. The exerciser can generate standard and erroneous PCIe transactions across all layers of the PCIe stack and may be programmed using the Graphical User Interface (GUI), Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM), or Tcl scripting. Also available is record/replay capability. This feature allows users to capture real-world link traffic with the analyzer and then replay this traffic back out through the exerciser to reproduce intermittent errors. Also included is multi-port support, allowing users to concurrently test multiple PCIe links and Ethernet-based communication, allowing remote control and shared access among geographically separated teams.
Users of the E2960A utilize it for bring-up, driver and BIOS development, and quality assurance of motherboards, chipsets, add-in cards, and embedded systems utilizing PCI Express. The exerciser exercises data paths and validates compliance with the PCIe protocol by generating errors and corner cases. Users can create complex test sequences to exhaustively test corner cases. Fifty-eight hardware performance counters provide users with real-time insight into how well their links are being utilized and are efficient. Mid-Bus Probing extends physical layer access to dense board layouts. The device operates from dual-range AC power (100-120V / 200-250V / 550VA max / 47-63Hz).
