Keysight/Agilent E2969A Protocol Test Card for PCIe
The E2969A protocol test card from Keysight (formerly from Agilent) is used by research and development engineers to accelerate the process of validating PCI-SIG compliance. Co-developed with Intel, this product has been designed to test all aspects of PCIe chips, add-in cards, and systems through scripted testing that covers both the Transaction Layer and Data Link Layers. Additionally, these tests will examine power management and configuration space. The protocol test card can monitor how devices behave during error injection testing, which helps researchers identify specific protocol implementation failures.
One of the primary components of the E2969A is a field upgradable FPGA running at PCIe 1.0 x1 (2.5 GT/s). The test card can be installed into a test slot on a motherboard where it will function either as an endpoint or as an interposer for an add-in card. A USB 2.0 port allows remote control and topology simulation of the test environment. An additional port, specifically designed for connection to a Keysight E2960A analyzer, enables a researcher to perform root cause analysis when needed.
In addition to the physical components of the Keysight/Agilent E2969A, there are several software packages provided that allow users to conduct tests on their add-in cards in three different ways: AIC Mode, Topology Mode, and Known Endpoint Mode. AIC Mode allows the test card to act as a switch between the host computer and the device being tested. Topology Mode simulates various types of PCIe devices using a USB interface so that the user can verify how the BIOS enumerates and configures the various devices. Known Endpoint Mode is currently being developed and will enable the researcher to simulate known errors within a system for testing purposes.
As industrial automation engineers implement the Keysight E2969A to verify the integrity of PCIe links in embedded controllers, industrial PCs, and real-time data acquisition systems, early identification of any protocol issues significantly reduces debugging time, allowing for more stable communication within industrial environments. The automated nature of the power management and error checking also minimizes downtime risk associated with high-availability environments. The FPGA's ability to upgrade remotely and the ability to use a USB interface to simulate topologies also enable fast and efficient verification of BIOS handling of hot plug, advanced power states, etc. Thus accelerating the PCI-SIG compliance process and enabling faster time-to-market for industrial PCIe products.
