Keysight/Agilent E2997A PCI/PCI-X Analyzer Exerciser Bundle
The Keysight E2997A Test Bundle is an integrated, high-performance solution for analyzing and testing both conventional and extended buses (e.g., 32-bit vs. 64-bit) using PCI/PCI-X protocols. This test bundle combines two test cards from the E2920 Series: the E2928A PCI test card and the E2929B PCI-X test card for simultaneous visibility into each type of bus. In addition to capturing and displaying bus traces as well as decoding transactions in real-time, engineers utilizing this test bundle will be able to simulate real-world loading conditions on their target devices through simultaneous use of both test cards. Unlike traditional methods of swapping out hardware modules, there is no need for such hardware exchanges since the entire set of functions available on these two test cards can be accessed simultaneously. The base configuration is option #100, providing the basic capability to capture, time-stamp, and analyze data from both test cards.
Several software-defined options are also supported by the E2997A. The Performance Optimizer (option #200) allows engineers to measure throughput, latency, and bus utilization to identify where performance bottlenecks may exist within burst or split transactions. The Exerciser Module (option #300) is a scriptable traffic generator capable of creating customized read/write/config cycle combinations that can create deliberate errors and/or corner case times to "stress" the firmware of a device. The System Validation Package (option #310) automatically tests PCI/PCI-X compliance checks, verifies protocol rules, and performs interoperability test suites against relevant industry standards. An additional feature of this package is its ability to perform advanced fault injection techniques, including its support of a C-language API called "Protocol Permutation and Randomization" that can alter transaction order, payload size, and timing to expose protocol state vulnerabilities.
In general terms, this test equipment has found application in many areas related to developing and validating adapter cards, motherboards, and chipsets and debugging various types of embedded systems. Typically, designers will alternate between passively monitoring signals at the physical layer and actively emulating protocol-related faults. When physical-layer signal anomalies occur, they will correlate those anomalies with corresponding protocol-related failures. Additionally, because of its scalable architecture, the E2997A supports deep trace storage capabilities and hardware-based triggering based on specified bus events as well as time-correlated views across both PCI domains when using multiple cards together. The combined functionality provided by the E2997A's analysis/exerciser/validation capability in one integrated bundle enables faster identification of root causes during integration and pre-silicon verification phases while allowing the designer to easily add new test requirements as needed.
