Keysight/Agilent J2908A DDS 4-Wire Interface Module
The J2908A from Keysight (formerly from Agilent) is a DDS 4-Wire Interface Module specifically designed as a hardware component to be utilized in conjunction with the Agilent Advisor WAN Analyzer. The J2908A allows for extensive protocol analysis of multiple wide area network protocols (Frame Relay, HDLC, X.25, PPP & ATM DXI), as well as bit error rate analysis (BER). Engineers working on various types of industrial automation projects utilize the J2908A to ensure reliable data transfer across their mission-critical communications links—often through legacy networks where WAN reliability is paramount.
From a physical standpoint, the J2908A contains a single four-wire DDS (Digital Data Service) interface, which can be connected directly to the four-wire DDS circuits found in many private line and leased-line WAN backbones. Through the integration of the J2908A with an Agilent Advisor WAN Tester, engineers are able to observe all aspects of their WANs' protocol behavior, including any potential error conditions or performance issues in real time. Included with each Interface Module would typically be the module itself, along with all required cables and adapters to connect a four-wire DDS configuration to allow for simple use in both laboratory settings and in the field. BERT capabilities enable engineers to assess quantitatively the bit error rate and signal quality of their signals/circuits with no disruption to live traffic.
In terms of industrial automation applications utilizing remote telemetry, SCADA or other legacy control networks running either HDLC or X.25 over DDS, the Keysight/Agilent J2908A has proven indispensable. Specifically, the module enables engineers to identify any physical layer degradation, frame errors, or protocol mismatches that may result in intermittent communication failures. In addition to providing the ability to identify such issues, when combined with the Agilent Advisor WAN Analyzer, the J2908A takes what would normally be a basic testing environment and creates a sophisticated diagnostic tool capable of ensuring continuous uptime and data fidelity in automated systems dependent upon complex WAN configurations.
