Keysight/Agilent J3764A Single-Mode Interface for J3763A ATM Undercradle
The J3764A from Keysight/Agilent is a high-performance, plug-in module for the Keysight J3763A 622 Vu STM-4c / OC-12 ATM Undercradle. It has been developed specifically as an extension to the ATM Test Platform of the J3763A 622 Vu in order to enable the use of single-mode fiber optics in ATM Backbone Networks. The J3764A is equipped with one laser driver per channel, and each channel has two completely independent optical outputs (one per direction), which are powered by class 1 single-mode lasers operating at 1310 nm. Each output is also accompanied by one receiver input, which accepts both single-mode and multi-mode fibers. All optical interfaces utilize industry-standard SC connectors, making it easy to integrate these modules into your current setup.
The J3764A extends the capabilities of the 622 Vu ATM test platform to be utilized in all types of networks where single-mode fiber is commonly found, such as metro and long-haul networks with interfaces at 622 Mb/s (OC-12) and 622 Mb/s (STM-4C). The engineers will typically use this module to verify the integrity of ATM cells being transported through their network, measure optical power levels within the network, and isolate faults associated with signal degradation due to passive optical components. The two transmitter and two receiver channels provide redundancy in testing either for bidirectional transmission or for monitoring multiple paths simultaneously, both of which are very important for carrier-class ATM infrastructures. If the J3764A needs to interface to a system that uses multi-mode fiber, then 10 dB attenuator pads must be placed in series with the output transmitters to prevent overdrive of the receiver and ensure that reliable data can be collected.
When used as part of a complete ATM test solution set, the J3764A makes the J3763A undercradle a flexible test instrument capable of meeting both laboratory validation requirements, manufacturing testing requirements, and field service requirements. The dual laser design allows both a continuity check function and full-rate traffic generation at a wavelength of 1310 nm. The ability of the receiver to accept multi-mode fibers, when properly attenuated, provides the engineer with greater flexibility to work in hybrid network configurations. The automation engineer will find that using this module in his test rack will allow him to take advantage of the standardization of SC connectors used in this module and the predictable nature of the optical performance, thereby allowing the engineer to perform repetitive stress testing on ATM switches, routers, and other transport equipment without having to add additional media conversion hardware.
