The Keysight/Agilent J4648A T1 Primary Rate ISDN Module is an add-on hardware component for use on the Keysight Advisor portable network test system. The primary function of this module is to provide complete analysis of T1 (operating at 1.544 Mb/s) Primary Rate Interfaces (PRI), which operate over ISDN. This module has two types of connections available (balanced 100-ohm RJ-48C connectors and WECO mini-Bantam connectors) thereby providing a single point of access for the user to connect their T1 termination equipment (regardless of whether they have PRI terminated via a Bantam connector or an RJ-48C). The module provides full packet capture and multi-layered protocol analysis through all three layers (physical, data link, and network) of the ISDN stack.
In telecommunications and industrial automation environments, the Keysight J4648A module can be utilized by field service engineers and network technicians for the diagnosis and validation of T1 circuits supporting primary rate ISDN signaling. The module can decode and analyze many common protocols, including PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), Async PPP (Asynchronous Point-to-Point Protocol), Multi-link PPP (Multi-link Point-to-Point Protocol), and others typically employed in Legacy Wide Area Networks, Remote Site Connectors, and PBX Integrations. In addition to analyzing protocol activity, the module also performs bit error ratio testing (BERT) to determine if the line meets qualification criteria (line quality, frame slips, etc.) without affecting the operation of the circuit.
By placing the Keysight/Agilent J4648A module in the Advisor chassis, engineers will have a portable real-time diagnostic tool for primary rate ISDN networks. When using this module to diagnose issues related to T1 traffic flow, it will allow users to capture live traffic for future analysis and generate BERT patterns that may help identify physical layer impairments (e.g., excessive jitter or signal loss). With its ability to monitor T1 usage, decode protocol communications, and perform error tests, the ISDN Module reduces the need for users to utilize multiple separate pieces of equipment. The dual type of connector interface provided by the Keysight J4648A allows it to be compatible with older-style Bantam patch panels and newer-style RJ-48C interfaces, making fieldwork much easier when dealing with customers that have installed T1 networks from previous generations.
