Keysight/Agilent J5425A Keysight Switch Advisor
The Keysight Advisor J5425A converts Keysight's Advisor Protocol Analyzer into a single point of access for monitoring the overall health of a switch network using the data from any SNMP-enabled equipment. As with any switched industrial network, each port represents its own collision domain. Therefore, most of today's analytic tools are blind to traffic that exists beyond the immediate segment of the tool. The J5425A license removes this blind spot without adding additional hardware to allow remote collection of per-port statistical information from all managed switches and routers located throughout a multi-vendor plant floor.
When the J5425A license is activated, the Keysight Advisor will automatically discover all SNMP-enabled devices within a defined IP range and populate a list of available devices. Once discovered, users can sort the ports in descending order based upon either percent of usage (bandwidth) or number of errors, which will immediately indicate overutilized uplink paths or faulty connection paths causing CRC (cyclical redundancy check) and fragmented packets.
Upon further investigation of the suspected port, there will be provided total and polling period counters for such things as octets (bytes), collisions, FCS (frame check sequence) errors, and many others, allowing control engineers to confirm if their critical I/O link provides the necessary integrity for deterministic control communications. Additionally, a graphical representation of port usage will display 30 minutes of bandwidth consumption for each backbone switch, thereby providing confirmation as to whether those backbone switches have sufficient throughput for maintaining the necessary level of deterministic control communications.
Operators can define custom alert thresholds on an individual basis for each port, or they can set them at the stack level for an entire switch stack; therefore, operators receive proactive notifications when error rates or utilization levels exceed predefined threshold limits prior to impacting production. Monitored metrics can also be continuously logged to comma-separated values (.csv) for use in future trending analysis, capacity planning, or to assist in diagnosing intermittent faults. The ability to log and review historical trends and analyze problems in a timely manner allows industrial automation professionals to identify the root cause of a problem, i.e., determine why a specific variable frequency drive failed, where the source of a broadcast storm originated, etc., or to validate the effectiveness of VLAN segmentation from an engineer's workstation while eliminating the need to physically walk the plant floor.
