Keysight 3458A Digital Multimeter
The Keysight 3458A is a high-end system digital multimeter designed for production testing, R&D, and calibration where uncompromised accuracy and speed of measurement are required. The multimeter boasts 8.5-digit accuracy and a 100,000 reads-per-second maximum sampling rate for rapid data capture without compromising measurement quality. Seven fundamental functions, such as DC/AC voltage and DC/AC current, and resistance and frequency and period, are offered with programmable integration time from 500 ns to 1 second to tailor its performance as necessary.
Engineered for best system integration, the 3458A has front and rear access terminals, gold-plated tellurium copper inputs with minimized thermal EMF, and accommodates 2-wire and 4-wire resistance measurement configurations. The auto-cal function utilizes internal voltage and resistance standards, which reduces downtime to require only a 10 VDC supply and a 10 kΩ resistor for complete calibration. The high linearity, specified within ±0.05 ppm by the utilization of Josephson junction arrays, ensures a transfer accuracy of 0.1 ppm for direct current voltage over a period of one hour.
The multimeter provides higher performance in high-resolution digitization via selectable integration or track-and-hold paths with resolutions of 16 to 28 bits and bandwidths up to 12 MHz. Direct and sub-sampling techniques enable waveform capture at effective rates up to 100 MSa/s for repetitive waveforms. It is also programmable with the Keysight Multimeter Language (ML), enabling it to support automated test sequences stored in non-volatile memory for enhanced standalone capability. For AC measurements, the 3458A provides three true RMS modes: synchronous sub-sampled (1 Hz–10 MHz), analog (10 Hz–2 MHz), and random-sampled (20 Hz–10 MHz), with mid-band accuracies as tight as 0.03%.
Resistance measurements range from 10 µΩ to 1 GΩ, including offset-compensated ohms for series voltage error elimination. An internal guard terminal and switch provide for optimum common-mode noise rejection, and programmable delay and timing resolutions as low as 10 ns enable synchronization with precision.
Designed for reliability, the 3458A is subjected to severe environmental and stress testing for extended uptimes. The small instrument has GPIB interfacing, on-board 75,000 reading memory, and PTFE cable support for noise-free measurements. The instrument operates in 0–55°C temperatures with stability from long-term drift of DC voltage reference of 8 ppm/year (4 ppm with optional stability enhancement).
