Keysight/Agilent J8120A Vehicle Protocol Tester Series 500 (VPT501)
The Keysight J8120A is a rugged instrument that provides protocol analysis, timing verification, and node emulation for testing mixed CAN/LIN automotive networks. The J8120A has four ports (two each of CAN and LIN) that are equipped with built-in transceivers, as well as eight channels of programmable digital input/output (I/O) and a 2GB standalone data logger. All eight I/O channels have a shared 1 microsecond-accurate timestamp. The J8120A can be controlled over a local area network using a computer to provide seamless operation both locally and remotely. As such, the J8120A can serve as an independent data collection/analysis station that will collect traffic from within the vehicle continuously without requiring an external PC.
To perform timing diagnostics at the signal level, the J8120A supports standard DBC, LDF, and MCF file formats to automatically configure its hardware and establish timing constraints. Once configured, the J8120A's real-time timing engine continuously monitors every frame of data transmitted by the vehicle's buses to determine cycle jitter, follow-up time, and gateway latency. When any of these timing parameters exceed their established limits, the timing engine flags the error immediately. After detecting a timing fault, the J8120A uses its signal chain analyzers to track the transmission of data across the domains of interest to measure physical-to-protocol conversions, synchronization gap events, and end-to-end delay times with a minimum amount of user intervention. This process of correlating faults associated with timing eliminates multiple instruments that were previously required to troubleshoot intermittent communications problems during vehicle integration and field repair.
Rest-bus emulation on the J8120A requires no coding and enables users to emulate missing nodes or networks by simply clicking on them, which accelerates ECU validation. In addition, the J8120A includes an autonomous logger capable of logging extended periods of driving activity, all CAN and LIN traffic recorded along with the state of digital I/O for subsequent offline review. With capabilities including on-the-fly timing monitoring, analyzing signal flows across networks, and simulating nodes/networks without coding, the J8120A offers a comprehensive test solution to streamline workflows involved in developing vehicles and reduce time spent on troubleshooting issues related to protocol timing errors/gateway bottlenecks/signal conversion inconsistencies among automotive and industrial control systems.
