Keysight/Agilent U4612A Protocol Jammer for USB 3.0
Keysight's U4612A is designed specifically to act as a USB 3.0 protocol jammer that validates and stresses-tests all SuperSpeed designs by introducing faults into live traffic flow between any host and device. It acts as a testing tool to help identify weaknesses within an error-recovery and robustness process for the developer to simulate elusive issues in the field and force their design past normal operating parameters without changing the device's firmware or driver stack.
The U4612A introduces a variety of impairments (CRC errors, 8b/10b encoding errors, etc.) at the full 5 Gbps line speed while allowing 480 Mbps USB 2.0 data to be passed through unimpeded. A controllable list of possible errors includes payload modification, packet replacement, link command modification, payload substitution, ordered set substitution, and distortion. Triggering and controlling these functions is accomplished through four independent trigger sequencer systems with 26 states each, including multi-branching logic and access to 32 counters and 32 timers. By allowing the engineer to locate errors at specified points in time, during specific protocol sequences or timing windows, it allows the development team to better understand the impact on their product.
When combined with Keysight's U4611A/B series USB protocol analyzer, the jammer uses a shared graphical user interface, allowing users to "drag" events from the analyzer display into trigger, filtering, and searching criteria. Thus, allowing users to easily correlate injected faults with a device's actual time-based responses to those faults. A PC with a PCIe X4 or Express Card slot is required for the host machine as well as either a Windows OS version or a Linux distribution version (such as Fedora, Ubuntu, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux). In addition to a host computer, the jammer has a separate 19V DC power supply requirement and two additional BNC ports for connection to other test equipment for triggering purposes. While native USB 2.0 pass-through is provided as part of the product specification, activation of the SuperSpeed fault injection function is dependent on obtaining a valid license. Therefore, the U4612A is specifically designed to be an integrated component within your overall USB 3.0 development and troubleshooting process.
