The Keysight N2280A is a Quad 1×2 optical switching module based on the Agilent 3499 switching platform. It provides modular flexibility for building scalable optical switching configurations across diverse hybrid automated test environments. The module integrates with other 3,499 family electronic modules to create a complete hybrid switching solution. The module employs collimating lenses and optical relays that are specifically designed to minimize insertion loss during switching. These relays enhance switching stability and repeatability, ensuring consistent optical signal routing across all channels. The module is optically passive and operates completely independently of data rate and data format.
The optical module supports single-mode optical fiber of the 9/125 type for standard deployments. The wavelength range spans both 1310 nm and 1550 nm, accommodating the two primary fiber optic telecom operating bands. The insertion loss in single-mode operation is specified at no more than 0.8 dB for consistent signal integrity. The return loss in single-mode configuration is rated at a minimum of 55 dB when measured excluding connectors. This Keysight optical module achieves a switching repeatability of ≤ ±0.005 dB for high-precision repeated test cycles. The optical prisms are used as the relay mechanism delivering strong mechanical durability and optical signal accuracy. The SC/APC connectors are integrated at all module ports to ensure stable and low-loss fiber termination.
The module is applicable to SONET/SDH testing, fiber optical component testing, and fiber optical network monitoring tasks. It also supports fiber optic network configuration as well as multi-source signal selection and measurement operations. Two channels located in separate modules can be synchronously switched via the dedicated "CARD PAIR" command. This synchronized switching feature enables coordinated optical path control across multiple modules in a test system.
The N2280A Optical Module occupies two slots in a 3499A/B mainframe, allowing for a compact and organized rack installation. The model is an off-the-shelf module specifically built for fiber optic communications test applications requiring high repeatability. Its passive optical design ensures no active components are involved in signal routing or optical switching paths.
