Keysight/Agilent M3302A PXIe AWG and Digitizer Combination
The Keysight/Agilent M3302A combines an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) that can generate two channels of waveforms independently, as well as a digitizer that can capture two channels of waveforms, all in one compact PXIe instrument housed in just 2 slots. Thus, there exists an opportunity to combine signal generation and acquisition processes within one device. The AWG portion of this device can produce up to 16-bit vertical resolution at 500 MSa/s per channel; however, the digitizer has a maximum vertical resolution of 14 bit @ 500 MSa/s. Thereby, these components together provide an ideal means for performing precise stimulus-response testing from DC to 200 MHz real-time bandwidth. In addition to its ability to operate as an AWG/digitizer, the M3302A also contains onboard memory that can be scaled up to 2 GB, which allows the user to store large waveforms (approximately 1 gigasample).
Industrial automation engineers use the M3302A primarily for hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS), automated test equipment (ATE), and high-speed control prototyping applications where fast closed-loop response times are required. Since the input-to-output latency of this device is less than 400 ns, it is particularly well suited for electronic warfare emulation, radar pulse generation, and software-defined radio transmitter validation. Additionally, optional real-time sequencing using Keysight's proprietary "hard virtual instrument technology" and direct FPGA programming on the Xilinx Kintex-7K410T allow users to take advantage of deterministic processing capabilities at the hardware level without requiring the need for host intervention. Furthermore, since multiple modules can be synchronized and sequenced in parallel, the complexity of multi-channel test architectures is greatly reduced.
Each digitizer front-end channel can be configured to either 50 ohms or 1 megohm impedance, AC or DC coupling, and seven full-scale ranges from 125 mVpp to 8 Vpp into 50 ohms or up to 16 Vpp in high-impedance mode. Typical dynamic performance at 95 MHz includes 10.6 effective number of bits and a spur-free dynamic range of 71 dBc. Programming support for the M3302A is available via Python, MATLAB, C++, LabVIEW, and Visual Studio. Also, each digitizer channel has independent DMA channels, which can be used efficiently to stream data over PCI Express Gen1. These capabilities provide an opportunity to use the Keysight M3302A as a flexible building block for quantum computing experiments, scientific research, and baseband communication testing where synchronized AWG and digitizer operation are essential.
