Keysight/Agilent M9165B 2X8 PXIe Switch Matrix
The Keysight M9165B is a full 2x8 crossbar PXIe solid-state switch matrix that spans 300 kHz to 9 GHz. This non-blocking matrix allows any input to connect to any output (and all combinations thereof) simultaneously and therefore provides a very efficient means of connecting signals within a large number of channels when designing automated test equipment or multi-port Vector Network Analyzer systems. The Keysight M9165B replaces many banks of discrete switches and complex cabling associated with other architectures by providing easy-to-use test configurations for various applications, including but not limited to 5G massive MIMO antenna characterization, filter bank testing, and phase array module verification. Also, multiple M9165B matrices can reside in one PXIe chassis, allowing for incremental expansion of ports and therefore a pathway for development and then transition into a production environment.
The M9165B has a solid-state architecture, thereby achieving a typical switching time of 50 µs along with an operating lifetime significantly longer than that of most electromechanical switches. In addition, this greatly reduces the total cost of the test. Isolation on the M9165B is guaranteed to be no less than 90 dB for frequencies up to 1 GHz and 88 dB for frequencies up to 9 GHz, thus virtually eliminating crosstalk in dense ATE rack environments. The input connector will handle a maximum power level of +25 dBm, while the 1-dB compression point (P1dB) is also +25 dBm and the Total Output Power (TOI) is +54 dBm, thus ensuring linear measurements are made. The front panel SMA-female connectors provide rugged and reliable RF connections. Additionally, the Keysight M9165B includes integrated temperature compensation; therefore, there are no adjustments needed to maintain stable insertion loss (IL) and isolation (ISO) over the entire frequency range.
Design engineers use the Keysight M9165B combined with Keysight M980xA PXIe VNAs to develop multi-port measurement systems for 5G massive MIMO, multi-channel filters, and phased arrays that include beamforming. The solid-state design of the Keysight M9165B provides tens of millions of consistent switching operations before failure and/or degradation occurs; thus, there is no mechanical wear and/or calibration drift. As the central switching matrix, it streamlines test sequences, minimizes the size of the system, and enables repeatable high-speed measurements. Therefore, due to its ability to perform ultra-fast solid-state switching, have high isolation characteristics, and utilize built-in temperature stabilization, the Keysight M9165B provides a key element for the creation of production RF test environments where accuracy, repeatability, and reliability dictate overall yield.
