Keysight/Agilent M9403A PXIe Optical Transmitter
The Keysight M9403A PXIe Optical Transmitter is a 2-slot, 3 U PXIe RF-to-optical converter designed to convert microwave and/or RF signals into a single-mode optical carrier (at 1550 nm). Formerly under the manufacturer Agilent, the device has been engineered to support a wide band frequency range of 300 KHz to 26.5 GHz or 50 GHz, depending upon the option chosen. This makes the device ideal for a variety of demanding RF test configurations that require the transportation of RF signals over long distances with little or no degradation to the signal path. The device takes a standard 50-ohm RF input and converts this for optical transmission via fiber optic cable, and does so without the need for an external software program or separate controller.
There are two different versions of the M9403A available based upon whether they have or do not have an onboard RF amplifier. The H02 version includes the added functionality of an onboard amplifier to provide sufficient gain to increase usable input sensitivity as well as reduce link noise figure. In contrast, the H01 version simply represents the direct electro-optic conversion process. The Options provided are F26 and F50. Option F26 utilizes a 3.5mm RF connector and provides a frequency range of 300KHz to 26.5GHz. Option F50 also utilizes a 2.4mm RF connector but provides a wider frequency range than F26 up to 50 GHz. The M9403A derives its power from the PXIe chassis and was developed specifically for use within bench, rack, and/or system-level configurations that require "clean" RF transport via fiber optics.
In practical terms, the M9403A can be utilized within a variety of RF/MW test environments where signals must be transported over long distances without suffering loss and/or interference due to coaxial cabling. Some examples of such applications include antenna ranges, earth stations, remote measurement systems, etc., that benefit from optical isolation between the signal generator and the receiver. Through the conversion of RF signals to light and transmission over single-mode fiber, the module will help preserve signal integrity when transporting signals over longer distances as well as simplify system design when constructing distributed test systems. Therefore, the Keysight/Agilent M9403A would make an excellent choice for engineers developing PXIe-based RF transport solutions for complex validation/measurements and antenna characterization workflows.
