Keysight/Agilent X8711A IoT Device Functional Test Solution
The Keysight/Agilent X8711A is an over-the-air (OTA) testing tool that provides a means for functional validation of a variety of wireless IoT modules that are running production firmware. The Keysight X8711A performs OTA measurements, including transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, and packet error rate, to help identify problems related to manufacturing and assembly defects such as incorrect or missing components, improper soldering, and other similar issues. However, no additional complex external equipment is required to perform these measurements. When using the Functional Test Solution as it was designed to operate (in software control mode) the device simulates how a user would normally use the product and reduces the complexity associated with identifying defects. The Keysight 34939A RF option may be used to provide signal routing and path loss calibration across one or many test systems.
The primary hardware combination consists of the Keysight 34972A Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) that has a six-and-a-half digit multimeter and the Keysight 34999A RF Module. In addition, both the TAP-based KS83301A/B and KS83302A/B suites support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) version 4.2 and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) versions B/G/N signaling. For BLE, transmit power measurements range from +10 dBm to -30 dBm with a ±2 dB accuracy. The receive downlink signal strength for BLE adjusts from –40 dBm to –75 dBm in 0.5 dB increments with a ±2 dB accuracy and from –75 dBm to –100 dBm in 2.5 dB increments. For WLAN, transmit signal strengths range from +10 dBm to -30 dBm with a ±2 dB accuracy. Receive sensitivity for WLAN ranges from –33 dBm to –70 dBm with a ±2 dB accuracy. The 34939A aids in calibrating signal levels prior to starting each test sequence.
In practical terms, an operator mounts the device into a shielded enclosure and runs automated test sequences that obtain transmitter and receiver results within a matter of seconds, which increases throughput and decreases product release time. In addition to BLE 4.2 and WLAN b/g/n, the solution also supports Bluetooth Version 5 and Zigbee Pro/ Zigbee 3.0 thereby supporting a wide variety of popular short-range standards. A major benefit of using the TAP Framework is it reduces the amount of effort required to develop tests. Additionally, the 34939A supports multi-port configurations via controlled attenuation and switching to maintain measurement integrity. In summary, the Keysight/Agilent X8711A provides a cost-effective method to ensure the RF performance of high-volume-produced IoT products.
