National Instruments 783664-01 NI-9216 C Series Temperature Input Module
The National Instruments 783664-01 (NI-9216) is an 8-channel, 24-bit C Series temperature input module designed for high-accuracy resistance temperature detector (RTD) measurements in CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. Optimised for PT100 RTD sensors, the module operates in a scanned sampling mode across all eight channels, measuring temperatures from -200 °C to 850 °C and resistance values from 0 Ω to 400 Ω. Signal conversion is driven by a 24-bit delta-sigma Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) providing a constant 1 mA excitation current per channel. It features two software-selectable conversion modes: High-Resolution mode (200 ms per channel / 1,600 ms aggregate scan time) for maximum precision and High-Speed mode (2.5 ms per channel / 20 ms aggregate scan time for a 400 S/s aggregate rate) for dynamic temperature tracking.
Measurement accuracy is supported by low noise profiles and minimal thermal drift. In High-Resolution mode, noise performance reaches 0.001 °C RMS (0.3 mΩ RMS) with a typical measurement accuracy of 0.15 °C and 85 dB normal-mode noise rejection at 50 Hz and 60 Hz. In High-Speed mode, noise measures 0.02 °C RMS (6 mΩ RMS). Temperature stability is characterized by a gain drift of ±7 ppm/°C, while offset drift measures ±3 mΩ/°C in 4-wire RTD configurations and ±3.3 mΩ/°C in 3-wire RTD configurations.
Built for rugged industrial field deployments, the enclosed IP40-rated module operates across an extended temperature range of -40 °C to 70 °C at altitudes up to 5,000 meters (Pollution Degree 2). While the eight channels share a common ground (non-isolated channel-to-channel), the module features robust channel-to-earth ground isolation rated for 250 Vrms continuous exposure (60 Vrms / 250 Vrms Measurement Category II), validated by a 3,000 Vrms 5-second dielectric withstand test to protect acquisition systems against ground loops and electrical faults.
