National Instruments 780968-02 C Series Current Input Module

The National Instruments 780968-02 (NI-9208) is a 16-channel, 24-bit C Series current input module designed for high-density 0–20 mA and 4–20 mA current loop monitoring in industrial control and data acquisition systems. Featuring a multiplexed architecture with a maximum sample rate of 500 S/s, the module operates in two selectable sampling modes: High-Resolution mode (52 ms conversion time per channel, 50 nA RMS input noise) for maximum precision, and High-Speed mode (2 ms conversion time per channel, 200 nA RMS noise) for rapid signal capture. The module features an input impedance of 85 Ω and supports a nominal input range of ±20 mA with a typical measurement span of ±22 mA (±21.5 mA minimum).

Designed for robust operation in harsh settings, the NI-9208 includes conformal coating and an IP40-rated enclosure. Electrical safety features include ±30 V overvoltage protection per channel and 250 Vrms channel-to-earth ground isolation under Measurement Category II conditions (withstanding up to 3,000 Vrms in a 5-second dielectric withstand test at up to 4,000 m altitude). The module utilizes a shared common reference for all 16 single-ended channels, eliminating channel-to-channel isolation while simplifying field wiring through a standard front-facing 37-pin D-SUB connector.

Engineered to maintain high accuracy despite environmental changes, the module exhibits a gain drift of 20 ppm/°C, an offset drift of 62 nA/°C, and exceptional normal mode rejection in High-Resolution mode (66 dB at 50 Hz and 68 dB at 60 Hz). Housed in a compact C Series form factor, the 780968-02 operates across an extended industrial temperature range of -40 °C to 70 °C (10% to 90% RH non-condensing), providing an ideal solution for direct connectivity to industrial transmitters, process control loops, and factory automation sensors within CompactDAQ or CompactRIO systems.
