The National Instruments 778936-01 (PCI-6509) is a 96-channel digital I/O device designed for industrial control, factory automation, machine control, and production test applications. Its bidirectional TTL/CMOS-compatible channels can be individually configured as inputs or outputs, allowing the device to interface with a wide range of sensors, switches, solid-state relays, pumps, valves, and other control equipment.
The device provides 5 V TTL/CMOS logic levels with up to 24 mA of output drive per channel. It uses a PCI bus interface and connects to external equipment through a 100-pin female SCSI connector.
For applications where startup behavior and fault handling are important, the 778936-01 includes several useful digital I/O features. Nonvolatile power-up states allow the initial state of each output to be defined in advance, helping prevent unintended actuator operation when the system starts. A built-in digital I/O watchdog can place outputs into user-defined safe states if a fault is detected with the computer or control software.
The PCI-6509 also supports change detection, which can detect digital input transitions without requiring the processor to continuously poll every channel. Software-selectable input filtering helps reduce the effects of switch bounce, electrical noise, and short signal glitches. A filtered version of each digital input is available to improve the reliability of signals in electrically noisy environments.
The 778936-01 is compatible with NI-DAQmx, providing access to tools such as the DAQ Assistant and automated code generation for configuring and programming the device. These features make it suitable for integrating high-density digital I/O into automated test systems, production equipment, and industrial control applications.
