The National Instruments 781290-02 (NI-6584) is a 32-channel, reconfigurable digital I/O adapter module designed for user-programmable NI FlexRIO FPGA host modules. Delivering half-duplex differential RS-485/RS-422 communications across 16 bidirectional digital channels, the module utilizes a front-panel 68-pin VHDCI connector to interface with industrial control buses, customized digital protocols, and serial communications networks. Each differential channel features independent TX and RX enable controls, 100 Ω differential characteristic termination impedance, and a 5 V maximum input differential voltage—supporting deterministic data transmission rates up to 16 Mbit/s per channel when properly terminated.
For system timing and hardware triggering, the adapter includes two dedicated front-panel BNC connectors operating as a clock line and a single-ended Programmable Function Interface (PFI) line. Operating up to a 16 MHz maximum clock toggle rate, these 50 Ω I/O lines accept logic input thresholds of 2.5 V high (VIH) and 0.8 V low (VIL), backed by a 50 kΩ nominal input impedance and software-configurable per-channel direction control. Direct integration with the host FPGA module enables low-latency peer-to-peer data streaming to adjacent PXI Express cards or target computer hardware without burdening the host CPU.
Powered directly through the host FlexRIO FPGA board edge connector, the NI-6584 draws up to 100 mA at +12 V (1.2 W max) and 500 mA at +3.3 V (1.65 W max). Occupying a single FlexRIO adapter slot, the 298 g module measures 13.1 cm × 2.0 cm × 12.9 cm and is engineered for indoor deployment across an ambient operating temperature range of 0°C to 55°C (10% to 90% non-condensing relative humidity) at altitudes up to 2,000 meters.
