National Instruments 778255-01 PCI-GPIB Instrument Control Device
The National Instruments 778255-01 (model name PCI-GPIB-LP) is a low-profile GPIB interface board providing an IEEE 488 connection between your PC and instruments. Built into very small spaces inside the PC case, as well as smaller desktop cases and low-profile chassis, this compact GPIB controller supports all the functionality provided by National Instruments’ standard-size PCI-GPIB board. It can be used with either 3.3V or 5V PCI slot configurations to fit virtually every type of motherboard produced since the introduction of the first PCI slots. The 778255-01 uses two chips internally—a TNT ASIC from National Instruments and a dedicated PCI interface chip—to handle the communication between the host computer and the GPIB instruments. The 778255-01 also manages the IEEE 488.2 Specified Roles of Controller, Talker, and Listner.
When utilizing the Standard Three-Wire IEEE 488.1 Handshake Method, the Data Transfer Rate on the 778255-01 is greater than 1.5 MB/s. However, when utilizing High Speed Non-interleaved Mode (HS488) developed by National Instruments, the Data Transfer Rate can be up to 7.7 MB/s. A built-in bus-master DMA engine transfers data from one memory location to another, thus allowing the host processors to focus on other operations instead of transferring data back and forth from instruments. No external power source is required because power is supplied by the +5VDC line from the host system at approximately 600 mA. All configuration options require only software-based operation and allow for "plug and play" operation, eliminating the need for jumpers or switches to set up the board for use, thereby making it easier to install in test environments.
In most applications, engineers will place the 778255-01 in test bays, calibration laboratories, and production lines where there is a requirement for a compact PC to control GPIB oscilloscopes, GPIB signal generators, GPIB power supplies, and GPIB multimeters. Due to its ability to provide identical performance compared to the full size PCI-GPIB board, users who have moved between different chassis sizes will find that they have retained similar driver and behavioral characteristics through their use of the NI-488.2 software. Therefore, this board should be considered a viable option for space-constrained industrial automation and instrumentation systems that require reliable GPIB connectivity.
