National Instruments 777642-02 Serial Interface Card
The National Instruments 777642-02 (PCI-232-2) is a two-port RS-232 serial interface card designed for use as an asynchronous communication path between a PCI-based computer and various connected instrumentation or peripherals. This interface meets the PCI Specification 2.2 and can be used with both 32-bit and 64-bit bus architectures. Therefore, system integrators have the ability to install this board into a variety of desktop and industrial PC configurations. Each port has a male DB-9 connector, which connects to legacy serial devices via standard RS-232 pin assignments, so no adapters need to be purchased to connect these older devices directly to the board. Additionally, data transfer occurs on this card at speeds of up to 115.2 kb/s, and there is a 64-byte FIFO buffer on each channel. These buffers help reduce CPU overhead and provide consistent performance under high-volume data transfer conditions.
In addition to functionality and reliability, durability and signal integrity were major considerations in designing the 777642-02. Electrical surges, such as lightning strikes and static electricity, are common problems found in industrial environments and on factory floors. To protect against these electrical transients, NI inserted ESD protection for all four data lines of the 777642-02 at levels greater than 15 kv. Each of the four data lines has been assigned a full-duplex RS-232 transmitter/receiver pair consisting of one driver and one receiver. With these pairs capable of supporting both simultaneous two-way communication and hardware handshaking for those devices requiring flow control, the NI PCI-232-2 is capable of providing reliable connections between different types of peripheral equipment.
Cable lengths of up to 50 ft. can also be accommodated by this card without degrading the quality of the signals being transmitted between the host computer and the instrument(s). Once installed into a PCI slot, configuration of the 777642-02 is accomplished using a "plug and play" method. After card installation into a vacant PCI slot, the host computer will recognize the card and configure the necessary drivers to enable communication with other boards located within the same network. In addition, the PCI-232-2 part number 777642-02 supports multiple operating systems, including Windows through XP and several Linux distributions. Application examples for which this product would be particularly suited include automated postal sorters, telecommunications infrastructure, and power distribution control systems.
