National Instruments 777733-08 RS-232 Serial Interface Module
National Instruments' 777733-08 (Model PXI-8420/8) is an 8-port RS232 PXI Serial Interface Module. The 777733-08 provides additional asynchronous serial interfaces in industrial automation and test systems by connecting to your PXI system's slot using a standard PXI chassis. This interface module offers one 68-pin front panel SCSI connector that contains all eight RS232 ports. In addition, this product will support all types of serial instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, bar code readers, and other industrial equipment that require RS232 signaling.
The 777733-08 interface module also comes with a set of DB-9 adapters. These DB-9 adapters are used to split the 68-pin interface into eight standard male DB-9 serial connectors to allow for easier field connections and less complicated wire connections. Each of the eight DB-9 serial connectors can provide up to 115.2 KB per second data transfer rates. In addition, each DB-9 serial connector has a FIFO buffer (First-In, First-Out Buffer) of 64 bytes to ensure reliable serial communications even when data is being continuously transferred. This module uses the following power requirements from the PXI +5 VDC supply: 150 mA typical and 250 mA maximum. The 777733-08 also requires the following power requirements from the +12 VDC supply: 80 MA typical and 800 MA maximum. The 777733-08 provides 15 kV Human Body Model Electrostatic Discharge Protection on the data lines to protect connected equipment from ESD damage due to environmental electrical variations.
The engineers at many companies utilize the 777733-08 in their applications involving real-time industrial control, manufacturing test, and data acquisition; however, they typically do so only as long as deterministic serial communications are required. Since the 777733-08 is totally compatible with LabVIEW Real-Time, engineers can easily integrate this module into deterministic PXI controllers that run under the NI Real-Time operating systems. Many common application examples for this module include multi-instrument automation setups, supervisory control & data acquisition links, and interfacing industrial sensors via RS232. Due to its multiple ports within a small footprint and native PXI format, the 777733-08 reduces the number of slots needed in a chassis and makes the cable management simpler in large-scale test racks. Additionally, since the 777733-08 has continuous data transfer capability and built-in protection against environmental hazards such as ESD, it is very easy to find a place for this type of module on your production floor monitoring or machine-level serial networking applications.
