National Instruments 778296-02 VXIbus Controller
The National Instruments 778296-02 is a VXIpc-872B embedded controller that utilizes a 1.26 GHz Pentium III CPU along with Windows NT 4.0 already installed onto its internal hard drive. As a dual-slot, C-size VXI, the model can be used as either a Slot 0 (SLOT 0) or Non-Slot 0 (NON-SLOT 0) configuration, providing flexibility in terms of deployment within larger VXI mainframe applications. Utilizing the Intel 815E chipset, the embedded controller provides the same PC capability as a desktop computer but located inside your VXI application, allowing you to have complete control at the register level of your backplane resources and still utilize standard Windows-based development toolsets.
The 778296-02 features 256 MB of SDRAM PC133 memory and is upgradable to 512 MB of memory. The model also has a 30 GB hard drive and comes equipped with a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive. Additional storage alternatives are available through the use of an internal IDE Flash Disk Drive or an external removable ATA Flash Disk Drive. A major difference between the lower-tiered models and the 778296-02 model is that there is no internal CD-ROM drive. The connectivity package included with this model features a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet connection for network communications, Wide Ultra2 SCSI for connecting additional external devices, IEEE 488.2 GPIB for controlling instruments, two RS-232 serial ports, one parallel port, two PS/2 ports, and two USB 1.1 ports. For video display purposes, the model uses the onboard Intel 82815 graphics controller. The front panel allows users to easily connect and disconnect to/from all of the peripherals included with the model.
One distinct feature of the National Instruments 778296-02 is its built-in PCI expansion slot. Users may install either a full-length or short-length PCI card into the expansion slot, depending upon their specific needs. This part contains an MITE-based VXIbus interface and is fully VXIplug&play compliant. The compliance will allow seamless compatibility with other VXI modules in addition to having support for VxWorks and Linux operating systems. Therefore, it is ideal for use within demanding automated test & measurement systems, data acquisition applications, and instrumentation control applications using VXI technology.
