Pickering 40-541-021 PXI Matrix Module
The Pickering 40-541-021 is a high-density PXI matrix module designed to provide advanced routing options in complex automated test and data acquisition systems. The module is a single-slot 3U PXI card that has been built as a 66x8 one-pole matrix, offering 528 cross-points to connect multiple input channels to multiple output channels. The module employs high-reliability sputtered ruthenium reed relays to perform switching, which have proven to be very long-lived and have consistently provided stable contacts over a billion cycles (switching at relatively low power levels). Additionally, the module can switch signals up to 150 VDC or 100 VAC and can handle current up to 0.5 A with a maximum power rating of 10 W. The switching architecture of this module provides both fast operation and release times of less than 300 microseconds, which are necessary for high-throughput production testing applications.
One of the key benefits of the 40-541-021 is that it can be ordered as a partially populated matrix, and therefore the user can purchase only the number of cross-points needed (i.e., 66x6 or 40x6) and then add additional cards to increase the overall matrix size (via daisy-chained common signals). In terms of signal quality, the module has a typical -3 dB bandwidth of 20 MHz in a 50-ohm system and also has good crosstalk and isolation performance. The maintenance of the module is made easier due to the use of leaded relays, which are easily replaced by the user with the same types of replacement relay kits used on other similar products, and thus minimize downtime of the entire system. All of the signal connections are provided via a robust 96-pin male micro-D connector located on the front of the module, thereby eliminating the need for the user to install external terminal blocks. Software support is comprehensive and includes Windows and Linux drivers and diagnostic tools, such as eBIRST, which enable the user to quickly diagnose the status of their system, including identifying faulty relays in their matrix, and thus enable the user to maintain their system and maximize system uptime.
