Tektronix TDS3034B Digital Phosphor Oscilloscope

The Tektronix TDS3034B digital phosphor oscilloscope is designed for automation diagnostics. It provides 300 MHz analog bandwidth across 4 input channels with independent acquisition resources per channel. This unit supports a real time sampling rate of 2.5 G samples per second on every channel to allow accurate capture of fast control edges and narrow automation glitches during commissioning work. The vertical system of the Tektronix TDS3034B oscilloscope offers sensitivity from 1 mV to 10 V per division. Its 9-bit vertical resolution supports precise characterization of low-level feedback signals in servo applications. Input impedance is selectable between 1 M Ohms with 13 pF and 50 Ohms termination impedance. The unit’s peak input rating is 150 VRMS for direct connections within industrial control panels.

The horizontal system of TDS3034B covers time bases from 2 ns to 10 seconds per division. Its time base accuracy of 20 parts per 1000000 ensures repeatable timing measurements on encoder and bus signals. A record length of 10000 points per channel enables long acquisition windows without sacrificing temporal resolution. Its peak detects acquisition resolves pulses as short as one nanosecond which mitigates missed transient switching events. The acquisition architecture of this digital phosphor oscilloscope uses digital phosphor processing to achieve 3600 waveforms. Its waveform capture rate per second is maintained during continuous operation which supports efficient troubleshooting of intermittent faults. The unit’s wave-Alert anomaly detection monitors incoming waveforms on all active channels and flags deviations from learned references. This function supports unattended monitoring of motion axes or field devices over extended endurance or soak testing.

The trigger system of the TDS3034B provides edge video logic pulse and communications oriented triggering capabilities. Its B trigger operation enables triggering after specified time intervals or after defined event counts in repetitive sequences. Trigger holdoff and flexible coupling selections support stable triggering on complex protocol bursts in industrial networks. External trigger input accepts over 1 M Ohm impedance and shares the same 150 V rating. Measurement functions in the TDS3034B include automatic timing amplitude and statistical measurements with user definable thresholds. It’s 4 measurement features can be displayed simultaneously with gating by screen boundaries or adjustable cursors. Fast Fourier transform capability is standard and supports spectral analysis of power supplies and drive outputs. Its deskew adjustment improves channel to channel timing alignment which enhances accuracy of propagation delay measurements.

How-to Troubleshoot the TDS3034B Tektronix TDS3000B Oscilloscope

General Troubleshooting Tips

  • Verify that your factory defaults were in fact recalled before configuring your scope or taking any measurements.
  • Double check the circuit configuration. An incorrect connection or missing wire could alter your results.

Function Check procedure for Tektronix Oscilloscope

  1. Connect your oscilloscope power cable
  2. Power on your oscilloscope. Confirm that self tests have passed.
  3. Connect your oscilloscope probe to channel 1. Connect the probe tip & reference lead to PROBE COMP connectors.
  4. Press the AUTOSET button. You should see a square wave in the display (approx. 5V at 1kHz).

Troubleshoot: RS-232 Communications Port

  1. Verify the correct cable and adapters are in use
  2. Verify that cables are connected to the correct ports
  3. Reset the RS-232 parameters to Defaults, then set the Baud Rate to match the computer or hard copy device.
  4. Enable the debug window to view the RS-232 status, data transmitted, data transceived, and errors.

Troubleshoot: No signals onscreen (after scaling & offsetting)

  • Double check for loose wiring or connections from the probe alligator clips / grabber clips.
  • Verify your black leads from the probes are grounded.
  • If earth ground is present, verify black leads of the probes and earth ground are at the same potential.

 Troubleshoot: Unexpected signal onscreen

  • Double check the timescale, a small piece of a larger waveform might be displayed.
  • Double check that probe clips are connected to the correct circuit node.

 If your problem persists

  • Recall factory defaults once more and try again
