Tektronix P6021 AC Current Probe and Termination
The Tektronix P6021 is a high-quality AC current probe, which will measure alternating current (AC) waveforms directly on an oscilloscope. With the ability to measure currents in a wide variety of electronic and power systems without interrupting operation, this tool gives technicians and engineers the ability to conduct non-invasive current measurements, which provides valuable information to help them troubleshoot problems or validate designs and analyze the performance of their products. The typical configuration of the P6021 includes the AC current probe, a special termination box, and ground wires. The purpose of the termination box is to provide a connection between the probe and a standard oscilloscope, which has a 1 Mega ohms input impedance, thus completing the measurement system.
Engineers can use the P6021 as an aid to troubleshoot and validate designs in a variety of products such as switch mode power supplies, motor drive circuits, etc.. Featuring two adjustable sensitivity levels, the P6021 can transform a current signal into a measurable voltage signal. Both of the sensitivity levels are useful in accurately viewing both low-level and high-level current signals. The open-end design of the P6021 makes it easy to place around a wire to become part of the transformer's primary coil without breaking the wire. This safe and reliable method of testing reduces electrical shock hazards associated with high-voltage lines.
In addition to being able to test at low frequency ranges (hundreds of Hz), the Tektronix P6021 is able to test at very high frequencies (several MHz). This makes the P6021 ideal for identifying and analyzing high-frequency noise and fast transient events. When selecting a probe for testing, critical considerations include how quickly the probe responds to changing current levels and how much load will be placed upon the circuit under test, hence the Tektronix P6021 is built with a fast rise time and a low insertion impedance. For sensitive tests, the Current Probe has a magnetic shield to prevent external electrical noise from entering into the measurement system and techniques such as routing the wire through the probe core may improve the measurement system's sensitivity.
